As part of our maths we are taking a photo of an Autumn tree everyday to record the changes. You can see our tree at flickr.

Update; it is now the beginning of June and after some strong winds our tree is looking very bare. The air temp has dropped and it is feeling chilly too but the usual strongs haven't arrived yet. Voyagers are making the most of the still weather to get outside.

We have planted some seeds that we are caring for and watching grow. The seeds we have planted are flax plants native to New Zealand. Our natives grow slowly. At the end of the year we hope to be able to plant them in our school grounds. In a few years we will be able to use the flax we have grown to learn to weave.

UPDATE; August 2007
Our tree has been bare for many weeks now. We are looking forward to spring being just around the corner and seeing some budding new green leaves.
Sean has been watering our flax seeds but the news is not good... nothing has happened... there seems to be a little white mould on some of our pots but no shoots. It is VERY DISAPPOINTING and Sean keeps hoping if he diligently waters that a miracle will occur. I'm afraid we will have to try again when the weather warms up.

What Plants Need

We planted our crops and our beans. We gave our seeds what they needed to grow into a plant. But now, we have to give our plants what they need so they can grow. Plants need four things to grow and to be healthy:

1. Plants need healthy soil. We planted this geranium in alkali (we have quite a bit of this around here). We gave it water, sunlight, and air, but look what happened:

2. Plants also need the right amount of water. Look what happened when we did not give our geranium any water:

3. Plants also need light. We gave this geranium air, water, and healthy soil, but we put it in the dark. Look what happened:

4. And, plants need fresh air. We put this geranium in a plastic bag and sucked out all the air. We gave it water, healthy soil, and sunlight, but look what happened:

Plants need healthy soil, air, light, and the right amount of water to live and to grow. Then we also have to worry about hail, wind, gophers, grasshoppers,.......

Look at our Plants! by Grade One
We planted bean seeds on April 30. We looked at our pots May 1. There were no changes.

We looked at our pots again on May 3. Some of us had some changes. We saw the seeds were bigger and cracked. We could see the seed was now a greeny-yellow colour.

By May 7, we had lots of changes. Some of the seeds had roots coming out. The roots were going to the bottom of the cup. They were a greenish-whitish colour.

Some of the plants were above the dirt. The stems were growing up. On the stems, we saw some leaves. Most of the plants had 2 leaves. We also saw the seed sticking to the stem of the plant. Miss Gauley said the seed feeds the plant until the leaves are big enough to make their own food.

Carter and Alex's plants were growing much faster than the rest of us. Roberta's seed did not grow, so she started another one to try again.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We looked at our plants on May 14. They were very tall. They had bigger leavs. They also had taller stems. The roots were longer. The roots grew all the way to the bottom of the cup. The seeds that were stuck on the stems were shrivled up and falling off. Roberta's seed was not growing.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We looked at our bean plants on May 22. We are very happy that Roberta's plant is growing a little bit. There was a stem and two leaves!!!! The plant was 13 cm tall. One of the leaves was 4 cm wide.

The rest of the plants had lots of leaves. Robyn's had five big leaves and four baby leaves. Her plant was 19 cm tall. One leaf was 4 cm across.

Alex's plant had more leaves. He had 10 leaves. One leaf was 4 cm wide. His plant was 25 cm tall!

Carter's plant was 24 cm tall. He thinks it is already full grown. It had 17 leaves with some baby leaves too. One of the leaves was 2 cm wide.

Travis' plant eight leaves. Some leaves were little and some were big. One leaf was 3 cm wide. His plant was 19 cm tall.

Some of the seeds we had in the cups did not grow at all.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once we get our plants to grow, do you know what we need to do to keep them healthy? We used really good soil, so they grew very quickly and got so tall so fast that the stems couldn't support how much they weighed. So, they leaned over. Then, because we had planted so many seeds, there were not enough nutrients in the soil and they began to turn yellow. What do you think? Let us know.

Also, check out the changes to a tree in our playground.

Participating Classes

Each of the classes below has its own page at this site. Do you know that they are all
different sizes?

The stems grew taller and the leaves grew bigger. We had more leaves. The oats, barley, wheat, and durum leaves were growing from the middle of the stem.
The chick peas, lentils, flax, and field peas have way more leaves than last time. Hopefully, these connections can lead to other collaboration.

If you would like to participate, just contact cassidy.kathy@prairiesouth.ca.

The KinderKids Page

 Mrs. Knee's Kindergarten Class
Deerfield, New Hampshire USA

Please visit our blog!

We wondered about growing wheat.

First we filled baskets with soil.

Then we wet the soil.

We planted the wheat seeds.

In 2 days, we could see sprouts.

We wondered about the sprouts.

In 7 days we measured our grass.
